Student Emergency Fund
SHIP STUDENTS NEED YOUR HELP
The Student Emergency Fund was established with donor contributions to assist students who have immediate financial needs that directly affect their ability to continue their education at Ship.
The fund is a supplemental financial resource when students are unable to meet immediate and essential expenses due to times of crisis such as illness or death of a family member, medical emergency, or job loss. Students may apply for funds when they have exhausted all other financial resources. Grants from the fund do not need to be repaid. The fund is open to all students with priority given to students with the highest financial need. A maximum amount of $500 may be requested each academic semester.
Why does the Student Emergency Fund need my support?
Contributions to the Student Emergency Fund make a difference for SHIP students who are truly struggling. Here’s what some students shared with us about the difficult situations they were facing.
“As a part-time, non-traditional student, it is nearly impossible to find scholarships to help with my tuition. I have maxed out my student loans and do not have access to other financial aid. I am a mother to three young children, and trying to finish my degree to make a better life for my family.”
“I have been struggling to make ends meet this semester due to rising gas prices and other expenses. My hours were decreased at my workplace, and I am struggling with my rent payments.”
“My father passed away suddenly which had a big impact on my mental health. I wasn’t working as much as usual, and most of the money I earned went toward helping my family with household expenses. I cannot afford my course materials this semester.”
“I could not afford a meal plan this year. I have been sacrificing eating lunch and breakfast to save money. I’m eating one meal a day and still barely able to afford anything.”
How will I make an impact?
Since November of 2020, 263 grants have been awarded for a total of nearly $118,000.
